Abstract
Introduction and Objectives: Nursing, which is defined as the profession that is grounded in communication with people, requires professionals who are healthy from psychological and physiological aspects more than other professions. The psychological and physiological health of nurses has an impact both on their fulfilment of professional responsibilities and maintaining social lives. This study was conducted on determining anxiety and depressive symptoms in nurses and related factors.
Methods: The study was carried out with nurses who were working in Diyarbakır Maternity and Children Hospital between the dates of March-April 2018, as a cross-sectional, descriptive and relation-searcher study. The study was conducted with 294 nurses who accepted to participate in the study without a sample selection. The data were collected through personal information form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). In the data analysis, percentage, minimum, maximum, Shapiro Wilk Test, Spearman Correlation Test, Mann Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis Test were employed.
Results: It was determined that the age average of the nurses who participated in the study was 32.85±8.41, %67.7 of them are female, %63.9 of them are married, %56.1 of them have a child, and %66.3 of them are university graduates. It was identified that %68.4 of the nurses demonstrate a middle level of depressive symptoms, %51.9 of them demonstrate a middle level of anxiety symptoms. As a result of the conclusion analysis, a positive middle-level relationship was calculated between BDI and BAI at a 0.001 level (p< 0.05).
Conclusion: It was determined that nurses experience a middle level of anxiety and depressive symptoms, and anxiety and depressive symptoms affect each other. Therefore, it is essential to determine anxiety and depressive symptom levels of nurses and implement protective measures.
