Abstract

Objective: The goal of this study is to evaluate the intercultural sensitivity and related factors of nursing students attending a state university located in the east of Turkey.

Methods: This descriptive study was conducted between April-May 2017 for the students of the nursing department of Ataturk Health Academy of Dicle University. The study sample consists of 236 students. Research data were collected through the data form and by using Intercultural Sensitivity Scale. Research data were assessed with Pearson correlation test, Studentt-test or Mann Whitney U test and One Way Anova or Kruskal-Wallis test.

Results: The total score average of intercultural sensitivity level of the nursing students participating in the research was determined as 91.20 ± 13.78. It has been determined that being a nursing 1st-grade student, having higher economic status, occasionally communicating with people from different countries via social media, being willing to work/living in a country with different cultures to participate in Erasmus student exchange programs have increased the level of intercultural sensitivity (p<0.05). In addition the level of intercultural sensitivity has increased as the level of job satisfaction increases (p<0.05). Conclusion: The intercultural sensitivity levels of nursing students were found to be agreeable.
