Abstract

Objective: This study was carried out in order to determine the knowledge and opinions about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) of nursing students who attend education at health school. Method: The study was planned as a cross-descriptive study in order to determine the knowledge about sexually transmitted infections of nursing students who will work in the health field. The universe of research, nursing students who attend education at health school at the time of the study were formed (N = 660). 73% of the universe (n: 481) was reached. Data collection form prepared by researchers in the direction of the literature and a total of 25 question were used. First of all, after informing the students about the purpose of the research, students who accepted to participate in the study were collected by applying the questionnaire.

Findings: The average age of the participants was 20.32 ± 1.70 years and the majority (76.9%) were 35 females. 60.5% of the students stated that they have knowledge about STIs, and 44.1% stated that they need to know about sexually transmitted infections. 24,1% of the students stated that sexually transmitted infections were not transmitted by any means other than sexual intercourse and 19,5% stated that they would not be able to refer to the doctor easily if there were suspicions about sexually transmitted infections. It has been determined that as the classes of students increase, their knowledge of STIs increases.

Conclusion: As a result of the research, it has been determined that the students do not have enough knowledge about sexually transmitted infections. It is very important that nursing students who will work in the field of health after graduation have sufficient and accurate knowledge of STIs.
