Abstract
Objective: In this study, post-discharge learning needs of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery were evaluated.
Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study included a total of 171 patients who underwent CABG surgery between June 2014 and December 2015 in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of a University Hospital. In data collection, Personal Information Form and Patient Learning Needs Scalewere used. Analysis of data was performed using SPSS statistical software version 17.0.
Results: Patients who participated in the study; 42.7% of the patients were 43-55 years (lowest 43, highest 72) and 56.1% were male. It was determined that the need for learning was mostly related to the daily living activities (32.14 ± 7.56, significance = 3.57) and the least related to feelings about the situation (15.03 ± 4.27, significance = 3.00).
Comparison of the socio-demographic characteristics of the patients and the mean scores of the patient learning needs scale showed that there was a higher need of learning in patients aged between 30 and 42 years, in males, in university graduates, in patients with an income over expenses and in patients receiving care from their partner However, there was a statistically significant difference only in comparison with age, marital status and caregiver (p <0.05).
Conclusion: In order to meet the care needs of patients after the Coronary Artery Bypass Graft, discharge training may be recommended considering the socio demographic characteristics of the patients.
