ABSTRACT
Objective
The aim of this study is to evaluate the readability of the scales related to breastfeeding.
Methods
The research is descriptive study and approval was obtained from the Sakarya University Ethics Committee (date: 10.02.2022, approval no.: 105386) in order to conduct the study. In February 2022, the scales related to the subject were scanned using the keyword “breastfeeding” on the Türkiye Measurement Tools Index official website, Google Academy and the National Thesis Center. As a result of the screening, 8 scales related to breastfeeding were determined. The readability formulas of Ateşman and Bezirci-Yılmaz, which are suitable for Turkish grammatical structure, were used.
Results
The readability levels of 8 scales related to breastfeeding included in the study were calculated according to Ateşman and Bezirci-Yılmaz scores. According to Ateşman score, one scale was readable 11th-12th grade level, 2 scales were readable at the 9th-10th grade level, 4 scales were readable at the 7th-8th grade level and one scale was readable at the 5th-6th grade level. According to the Bezirci-Yılmaz score, it was determined that once scale was readable at undergraduate level, once scale was readable at high school level, while other scales were readable at primary school level.
Conclusion
Considering the education level of our country, it has been determined that most of the scales developed or validated in Turkish on the subject of “breastfeeding”, which is very important, are readable.
