Abstract

Objectives: This study was carried out to determine the relationship between the number of screws applied at the transpedicular screw fixation surgery and the length of stay at the hospital.

Methods: In this retrospective descriptive type study, after the approval of the ethics committee, data were obtained retrospectively from records of patients with transpedicular fixation surgery due to degenerative disc disease between January 2017 and January 2018 in a neurosurgeon service of an education and research hospital in Istanbul.

Results: In the study, total 46 patients underwent surgery and 33 (71,7%) of these patients were females. Mean age of the patients was 62,39±12,7 and mean body mass index was 27,45±4,62. An average of 7±3 screws was implanted in this patient. In addition, the majority of these screws were applied to the lumbar region, and the patients lenght of stay was 4,1±2,2 days postoperatively, and all patients were mobilized on the first postoperative day.

Conclusion: Transpedicular fixation surgery is a reliable method with short duration of hospital stay, low blood loss and early mobilization with early returning to social life. As a result of this study, there was no significant relationship between the number of screws applied during surgery and the length of hospital stay.
