ABSTRACT
Objective
The aim of this study was to adapt the Occupational Low Back Pain Prevention Behavior Questionnaire in Nursing (OLBPPBQ) into Turkish to assess its validity and reliability among nurses in operating room and surgical clinics, as well as to enable further research.
Methods
The data of this methodological study were collected between July-December 2022. The population of the study consisted of surgical unit nurses working in the operating room and surgical clinics of a university hospital in İstanbul, and the sample consisted of 300 surgical unit nurses by taking 10 times the number of scale items. The research data were collected via online e-mail and text message using the Descriptive Characteristics Form, Back Pain Attitudes Questionnaire (Back-PAQ) Turkish version (Back-PAQ-Tr-20) and OLBPPBQ Turkish version (OLBPPBQ-Tr) forms. After examining the linguistic equivalence of the scale, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and goodness-of-fit statistics were evaluated for validity analyses. Concurrent validity was tested by Pearson correlation analysis of total subscale correlations. Internal consistency of the scale items was assessed with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The results were accepted at 95% confidence interval and significance was accepted at p<0.05.
Results: The content validity index value of the scale was 0.97. CFA showed that the OLBPPBQ-Tr form was in acceptable agreement with the original scale. The correlations of the scale with Back-PAQ-Tr-20 were found to be significant and positively correlated (p<0.001). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the scale was between 0.75-0.87 except for the “Knowledge” subscale (0.48) and 0.92 for the total OLBPPBQ-Tr.
Conclusion
The results of the study showed that the OLBPPBQ-Tr form is a valid and reliable measurement tool. It is recommended that the scale be used to assess occupational low back pain prevention behaviors in nurses working in surgical units.
