Male Nurse Perception of First and Second Grade University Students in Health Sciences

Objective: This research was conducted to determine the male nurse perception of first and second grade university students studying in health field.
Method: The research was conducted in a mixed method design. Purpose sampling method was used to collect data and conduct interviews. 268 students were included in the study and focus group interviews were conducted with 46 students who were included in the scope of the study in 5 sessions. Content analysis was used for analysis of qualitative data and descriptive analyzes were used for analysis of quantitative data using IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 package program.
Results: As a result of the research, it was determined that men should also be in the nursing profession and male nurses will positively affect the status and image of the profession. However, it is also stated that the female nurse is more accustomed and the success in nursing practice is more important than the sex. It is also stated that the existence of men in nursing profession will not make any difference in nursing profession.
Conclusion: Despite the elimination of gender discrimination in the nursing profession, it has been shown that gender discrimination continues in part in society. It can be said that this attitude of our society can be derived from patriarchal society structure and customs.

Sağlık Bilimleri Birinci ve İkinci Sınıf Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Erkek Hemşire Algısı

Amaç: Bu araştırma, sağlık alanında eğitim gören birinci ve ikinci sınıf üniversite öğrencilerinin erkek hemşire algısını ortaya koymak amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir.
Yöntem: Araştırma karma tasarımda gerçekleştirilmiştir. Verilerin toplanması ve görüşmelerin gerçekleştirilmesinde amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamına 268 öğrenci alınmış ve çalışma kapsamına alınan 46 öğrenci ile de 5 oturumda odak grup görüşmeleri gerçekleştirilmiştir Nitel verilerin analizinde içerik analizi, nicel verilerin analizinde ise IBM SPSS Statistics 22,0 paket programı kullanılarak betimleyici analizler kullanılmıştır.
Bulgular: Araştırma sonucunda hemşirelik mesleğinde erkeklerin de olması gerektiği ve erkek hemşirelerin mesleğin statüsünü ve imajını olumlu etkileyeceği belirlenmiştir. Ancak kadın hemşireye alışkın olma ve hemşirelik uygulamalardaki başarının cinsiyetten daha önemli olduğu da ifade edilmiştir. Ayrıca erkeklerin hemşirelik mesleğinde var olmasının hemşirelik mesleğinde herhangi bir değişiklik yaratmayacağı da ifade edilmiştir.
Sonuç: Hemşirelik mesleğinde cinsiyet ayrımının kaldırılmasına rağmen toplumda cinsiyet ayrımının kısmen de olsa devam ettiği ortaya konmuştur. Bu tutumun toplumumuzun ataerkil toplum yapısı, örf adet ve geleneklerinden kaynaklanabileceği söylenebilir.
